After several names being tossed around for the much anticipated Shah Rukh Khan starrer Raees, when Pakistani actress Mahira Khan was finalized, it came as a surprise to many. The film, which has been caught in several controversies ever since it has gone on floor, will now face another major change. Apparently, the makers have decided to chop off a good chunk of Mahira Khan’s role from the film after the wrath Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil faced.
In the wake of Uri attacks, Bollywood and the Film guilds in sync came up to a compromise wherein, Indian films have boycotted Pakistani actors. Since the decision came after some of these films were already shot, they were given an exception. One amongst them was Raees. The film has Mahira playing the leading lady and love interest of Shah Rukh Khan. However, now we hear that the makers, afraid of hurting sentiments of the public, decided to chop off portions of the actress.
It is being said that Mahira Khan’s role had a couple of romantic songs which will not be shot anymore and the one song that was already been shot has been canned. Even a romantic sequence between the leading characters has been chopped off. There were rumours that considering the sensitive situation in the country, a couple of shots with Mahira will be shot abroad but now it seems that isn’t happening either. Reportedly, Mahira’s role is compared to the screen time of Parveen Babi in the 1975 blockbuster drama Deewar, where though she was the glamorous leading lady of Amitabh Bachchan, she did not have too much of screen-time.
Raees, directed by Rahul Dholakia, has Shah Rukh Khan returning as the character with extreme grey shades. Set in Gujarat, the superstar plays the role of the bootlegger Raees Aslam, while Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the cop who cases him, ACP Ghulam Patel.
