One of the year’s biggest film music stories just got more personal. Composer, singer, and actor GV Prakash Kumar has revealed that he has lent his voice to Yash’s Ravana in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana: Rise of a Legend — and the invitation came straight from his mentor and maternal uncle, AR Rahman, in a surprise phone call.
Speaking to India Today Digital, GV Prakash said the opportunity arrived right after his first-ever visit to Ayodhya, where he had travelled for the launch of “Awadhiya Ke Raja,” a song from his recently released Hindi film Nayyi Navelli starring Yami Gautam. “The moment I came back from Ayodhya, I sang a song for Ramayana. It was surreal. I never expected that,” he said. “While I was coming back from the airport, I got a call from AR Rahman asking me to come and sing.” The musician, who began his career as a child singer in Rahman’s own compositions before becoming one of South cinema’s most prolific composers, described the experience as “a huge thing” — a small but deeply meaningful part in one of the most ambitious Indian films ever mounted.
The revelation lands at peak anticipation for the epic. The film’s new trailer was unveiled on October 15 at a grand event in Bengaluru, with a star-studded pre-release event set for Hyderabad on October 19. Ramayana: Rise of a Legend Part 1 arrives worldwide on November 5 in IMAX and premium large formats, with Part 2 slated for Diwali 2027. With music by the dual powerhouse of A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer and a cast led by Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, and Sunny Deol as Hanuman, the GV Prakash detail adds yet another layer to a soundtrack already being billed as a global event.
