Shreya Ghoshal is deepening her parallel life as an independent artist. The playback singer has released Bairi Piya, a new pop single through Universal Music India that places her unmistakable voice inside a contemporary soundscape threaded with Indian classical touches — warm synths, clean beats and a softer, more intimate vocal register.
The single arrives on the back of a chart-topping run. Her recent Kalyani (Remix), a collaboration with ARJN, KDS and FIFTY4 reworking MVR’s Malayalam indie track, reached No. 1 on Indian music charts and charted internationally, while the original has crossed 200 million streams.
Ghoshal says the draw of Bairi Piya was its melody and simplicity: “I enjoyed exploring this softer, contemporary space,” she says, describing independent music as “the freedom to keep discovering different sides of myself through it.” For an artist with more than two decades of playback behind her, the non-film lane remains a space to experiment with sounds and collaborations beyond the narrative demands of cinema songs.
As the line between Indian film music and the independent scene grows ever more fluid, Bairi Piya marks another confident step in Ghoshal’s musical journey beyond the screen.
