Filmmaker Abhinay Deo has locked October 23 for the theatrical release of his new film Doosra, unveiling the poster and trailer on digital platforms. The film is anchored in one of Indian cricket’s most iconic images — Sourav Ganguly waving his shirt from the Lord’s balcony after the famous 2002 NatWest Final victory over England — and takes it in an unexpected new direction.
Woven into that intensely public moment is a deeply private story. Doosra follows Tara, a misfit in a conservative household, who watches the Indian captain’s audacious act of rebellion on television and finds the courage to speak truth to power in her own world, whatever the consequences. The film is produced by Masha Sajdeh and Rohan Sajdeh with Neeta Shah as co-producer, with a story and screenplay by Agnello Oswin Dias and an original score by Ram Sampat. The cast includes Plabita Borthakur, Ankur Vikal, Samidha Guru, Tvisha Seema and Krishna Gokani.
The trailer has already won famous admirers. Anil Kapoor said he loved how Abhinay has blended two different worlds — reality and fiction — seamlessly, and recalled the euphoria of the NatWest Series as a moment that gave an entire generation the belief that India could win anywhere, against anyone. Rohit Sharma, who was just 15 when India won the final, said the film beautifully captures why the moment was more than just winning a match. Abhinay Deo calls it India’s new freedom story — not the political freedom of 1947, but an emotional freedom: a country finding its voice and a young girl finding hers.
