Shah Rukh Khan turned 61 on November 2, and his birthday gift to fans was not the teaser many had expected — it was a song. ‘Tu Mil Jaaye’, the first track from his action entertainer King, arrived just after midnight, opening the film’s music campaign seven weeks before release. Here are five things to know about it.
- A midnight birthday drop, not a teaser. Reports ahead of November 2 had pointed to a teaser arriving on Shah Rukh Khan’s birthday, but what the makers unveiled instead was the film’s first song, released by T-Series with its music video on the Zee Music Company and T-Series YouTube channels. Shah Rukh Khan shared it with the message, “This December, #LoveLikeAKing,” setting the tone for a campaign built around romance as much as action.
- A global vocal line-up. The track is composed by Sachin-Jigar, with Hindi lyrics by Kumaar and choreography by Piyush-Shazia. Arijit Singh leads the vocals alongside Madhubanti Bagchi, while Ed Sheeran contributes an English rap section that he also wrote — a striking international collaboration, though Sheeran is a featured vocalist on the track rather than its composer.
- The lover, not the killer. The 3-minute-42-second video opens with Shah Rukh Khan declaring, “Main qaatil nahi, aashiq hoon” — “I am not a killer, I am a lover” — before moving into colourful romantic sequences with Deepika Padukone against grand, exotic backdrops. It reunites one of Bollywood’s most loved pairings after Om Shanti Om, Chennai Express, Pathaan and Jawan, blending romance with bursts of high-octane action and the film’s trademark sense of menace.
- Part of a full birthday blitz. The song did not arrive alone. Shah Rukh Khan’s Mumbai home Mannat was lit with large projections and King visuals carrying dialogues including “King Akela Kaafi Hai” and “Darr Nahi, Dehshat Hoon,” the Bandra-Worli Sea Link was illuminated in his honour, and the day also brought a reported first look at Suhana Khan, making her theatrical debut in the film, plus a monochrome teaser post from Kareena Kapoor teasing a dance sequence with Shah Rukh Khan.
- What it sets up. King, directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Marflix Pictures, arrives in cinemas worldwide on December 24, 2026, with an ensemble including Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Anil Kapoor, Jaideep Ahlawat, Jackie Shroff, Arshad Warsi, Raghav Juyal and Abhay Verma. Reports also suggest a specially shot King promotional video will be screened alongside Ramayana in cinemas, though the makers have not officially confirmed that tie-up — for now, ‘Tu Mil Jaaye’ is the campaign’s opening move, and it chose melody over menace.
