Pakistan’s big screens get a dose of girl power today as Geo Films’ anthology film ‘Sheroes’ hits cinemas nationwide. Backed by the Sindh government’s information department and presented by Tamasha Films, the film bundles three standalone stories into a single ticket, each headlined by one of television’s most formidable leading ladies.
The three chapters — ‘Punch’, ‘Gear Up’ and ‘Artist’ — take on boxing, law enforcement and the art world. In ‘Punch’, Ushna Shah steps into the ring as a boxer, sharing the frame with Gohar Rasheed and M. Ehteshamuddin, under the direction of Badar Mehmood. ‘Gear Up’ casts Zara Noor Abbas as a police officer navigating a system that never expected her to wear the uniform — her first big-screen outing in nearly seven years. And in ‘Artist’, Kinza Hashmi plays a painter who begins selling forged paintings in a bid to be noticed, making her feature-film debut.
The project was developed as an initiative of the Sindh Information Department, with writing credits shared by Mohsin Ali, Hashim Nadeem and Amna Mufti, direction by Saqib Khan and Badar Mehmood, and Orient Distribution Club handling the nationwide release. Built around the idea of ‘three girls, three battles, one determination,’ the film positions women’s rights and empowerment as its beating heart — a concept that already drew strong reactions when the teasers dropped, and has its stars publicly championing the local industry ahead of opening day.
